Which Fabric should you choose?

Choosing the right fabric is the most important step before getting a garment sewed. Fabric is, by all means, the heart and soul of any clothing item and it can make or break your experience of wearing it. If the clothing is made from the wrong fabric, it will neither do justice to the design nor the objective of making it.

Fortunately, there’s always a way to find and lock that “right” fabric for your requirement, and here are a few pointers to help you hit the mark.

Prepare your mind

Before you go Fabric Shopping, make sure you have at least a basic idea of WHAT you want. The sheer number and variety of Fabric in the market might confuse and overwhelm you. Thus, for your own ease and comfort, prepare your mind and enter the market with a basic idea of the Fabric you want.

The basic idea could include pointers like type (cotton silk etc), pattern, color, and a mental picture of the final garment. Now, let’s talk about the “details”.

Check the Drape

Drape or more commonly known as ‘hang’ of the Fabric is crucial in evaluating how the garment looks once you put it on as a dress. To check, you have to literally evaluate how the Fabric hangs. Unroll the fabric a few yards and simply observe it hangs.

For your evaluation — stiff fabrics have fewer drapes i.e. they stick out when gathered, example — Linens. On the other hand, fluid fabrics have more drapes i.e. they hang softly, example — Silk. So, if you want your garment to flow like a skirt — you choose the one that drapes/hangs well. If you want a structured garment, choose a stiff fabric with fewer drapes.

The color

Color of the fabric is an important consideration. Always shop for fabric in daylight or at least take the fabric into natural light prior to purchasing. This is because lighting in a store can make a color look very different from how it looks naturally. It becomes all the more crucial to do this when you are choosing the fabric to match a certain color. Also, while choosing the color, one should also inspect the evenness of the dye to ensure it is without any streaks or spots.

Additionally, Fashion experts always ask you to make sure that the color suits your skin tone very well. So, do that!

Weight and Stretch

The weight of a fabric is measured in GSM (grams per square meter) and it defines how heavy or light a fabric is. Most of the good Fabric brands mention the weight of the Fabric for customer’s reference. Although, higher fabric weight does not mean higher fabric quality, it is useful in comparing two different types of Fabric. The right weight of the Fabric for you depends upon your clothing project.

Next, you must check the stretch of the Fabric by pulling it between your fingers. All you have to do is evaluate that element of stretch and choose what’s best for you. General rule is to purchase Fabric with less elasticity but it obviously depends on how you are going to use the Fabric. At the end of the day, you have to choose what works with your pattern and YOU!

And finally, BUY! Oh and it is important to know the right dimension and quantity of Fabric required. Make sure you get that right! Another useful approach while buying patterned fabric is to take “repeat” of the design into consideration. Make sure the cutting of the fabric is done so as to match the patterns at the seams.
